 Sanitary Sewer Overflow 2013-09-16

For Immediate Release

ANN ARBOR, Mich., Sept. 16, 2013 — On Monday morning, Sept. 16, 2013, an obstruction of grease and oil caused an 8-inch sanitary sewer line to back up, spilling  approximately 100 gallons of raw sewage out of a manhole cover on Pauline Boulevard and into an inlet to the city’s stormwater system.
At 10:15 a.m., a member of the city’s solid waste field services team reported water leaking from a manhole cover on Pauline Boulevard. Crews quickly worked to unclog the 8-inch sanitary sewer line, which was operating properly again by 10:30 a.m.  In addition, several nearby stormwater catch basins were vacuumed to remove any potential polluted water and sediments.
In accordance with regulatory protocols, the City of Ann Arbor contacted the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality to inform them of this incident. Field staff is commended for immediate reaction and resolution of the incident.
