The Ann Arbor Fire Department strives to hire the best candidates for Firefighter positions. Our goal is to employ individuals who are qualified and dedicated to a career in the fire services. Ann Arbor Firefighters are required to perform a wide variety of tasks, including fire suppression and rescue, fire prevention, and basic/ advanced life support, while serving as a member of a diverse team and community. Starting salary for Ann Arbor Firefighters is $43,585.26. Minimum entry requirements for Firefighter are as follows:
q Must be at least 18 years of age
q Possess a High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent
q Possess a valid U.S. Drivers license
q Firefighter 1 and Firefighter 2 certification
q EMT-B, EMT-S or Paramedic License
The Ann Arbor Fire Department makes all hiring decisions after a multi-step selection process, which includes:
q FireTEAM Testing: Video-Based Human Relations Test, ErgoMechanical Animated Aptitude Test, Reading Test and Math Test. A description of each test segment is available for viewing on www.ergometrics.org, along with the availability of a practice test.
q Panel Interview
q Comprehensive Background Investigation
q Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT)
q Physical and Drug Screen
q Psychological Examination
Candidates who pass FireTEAM Testing will be placed on an eligibility list according to their performance. The Fire Department will contact the top performing candidates on the eligibility list to proceed to the next step in the pre-employment process.
The job of Firefighter is physically demanding. Firefighters must be in peak physical condition - both at the time of hire and throughout a Firefighter's career. Ann Arbor Firefighters must be committed to working effectively with the general public, other City of Ann Arbor Departments, and other members of the fire service. For an Ann Arbor Firefighter, teamwork and respect for diversity are important aspects of this job.
