FIRE PREVENTION BUREAU ACTIVITIES
The Fire Prevention Bureau is responsible for providing inspection services to the community of Ann Arbor. These services include pre-construction site plan reviews, construction final inspections, existing commercial building inspections, automatic fire sprinkler plan review and testing, and fire alarm plan review and testing. The Bureau attempts to review and return all fire system plans within 72 hours of submission. Existing commercial buildings and businesses have become accustomed to seeing the Bureau staff in the role of fire safety inspectors and consultants.
The Bureau also conducts investigations into all fires which occur within the City. Determining the origin and cause of a fire plays a prime role in preventing future incidents. Bureau personnel remain "on-call" 24 hours a day to respond to fire incidents.
A special emphasis is placed on Community Fire Safety Education by the Bureau. To this end, we touched over 8,000 individuals in 2009 with lectures, discussions, station tours, school visits and many other awareness functions. New programs have been developed for large rental complexes and co-ops that will allow people to experience a simulated fire (using non-toxic smoke) in a unit similar to their own.
