Allmendinger Park Mural

The Allmendinger Park shelter mural project (working project title: "Nourishing Healthy Seeds") is a public art project in collaboration with the City of Ann Arbor, the Ann Arbor Public Art Commission, TreeTown Murals, and the Allmendinger neighborhood! Artist Mary Thiefels (treetownmurals.com) is currently installing a multi-media mural onto the pillars of the park’s multi-use shelter. The mural's design includes colorful painted areas along with tile and glass mosaic sections. Included within each mosaic section will be over 60 self portraits painted this spring by eighth graders at Slauson Middle School, well as several objects donated by people in the community. Donors of the "found objects" were asked to include a description of the item--a story detailing the item's significance. Some of these stories will be included as a part of the mosaic and the rest will be published at a project website.
Celebrate the Completed Mosaic Project at the Public Art Dedication on October 28th
You are invited to participate in the dedication of the Neighborhood Time Capsule Mosaic at Allmendinger Park. The dedication will be Sunday, October 28th from 2 to 4pm in the park. The final work will be unveiled at this family friendly event.

Mary has applied several of the mosaic sections to the shelter's columns. We took some photos to show the progress of the installation and have included them on this page.
Earlier this summer, Mary has been preparing the donated items--the "found objects"--collected from the neighborhood for the mosaic. The items were adhered to a glass piece or a tile. She photographed each one, which will later be included in an interactive website for the project.
More photos of the artwork's progress can be seen at the
artist's Facebook page.

This project is funded in part by the Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation.
