Project Update – 11/10/10
The City of Ann Arbor and its contractor, Ajax Paving Industries, Inc, recently completed the majority of project work to resurface Plymouth Road from Nixon Road to US-23, and Green Road from Baxter Road to Plymouth Road. The project was constructed in multiple stages that began on Plymouth Rd and once complete moved to Green Rd. Each stage included partial depth removal of the existing asphalt surface, pavement and curb repairs, sidewalk ramp replacement, filling in gaps in the existing sidewalks and/or asphalt paths, repairing utility structures, traffic signal work, and placing the new asphalt road surface. In addition, pavement markings on Green Road were re-configured from four-lanes to three-lanes. The new layout contains one south bound lane, one north bound lane, a bi-directional center left turn lane, and bike lanes in each direction along the curbs.
The project received bids through the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) in May of 2010, and construction began in early July. The project was funded by a federal grant from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) in the amount of $2,274,000, and the City of Ann Arbor Street Resurfacing Millage. The total estimated project cost was $2,700,000.
Several contract items remain to be finished. These include pavement markings for crosswalks, arrow and only symbols, and bike lane symbols at the Plymouth/Green intersection and along Green Rd, a few sidewalk and sidewalk ramp repairs, installation of several new signs and a few existing signs removed during the project, cleanout of several utility structures, and other minor work and cleanup. In addition, we are working to permanently repair a temporary patch on the north side of Plymouth Rd just west of Green Rd.
This project will not only improve ride quality and drainage for motorists using these roadways, it will improve the safety for all users and will extend the serviceability and life of this part of the City’s transportation system.
