 Solid Waste and Recycling  

 

The city provides municipal solid waste refuse, recycling, and compost collection and processing services.  All residents and businesses are eligible for weekly recycling collection at no additional charge. Ann Arbor is recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as having one of the top twenty waste reduction programs in North America.

Announcements

NEW federal requirements: used household batteries must be sealed at both ends with clear tape before recycling or discarding. See attached press release (1-page PDF).

There will be NO interruption of waste, compost, or recycling pickups due to the Independence Day Holiday on Saturday, July 4, 2009. City Hall offices, only, will be closed on Friday, July 3. Full holiday schedule link.

Washtenaw County has created a list of drop-off sites for a wider range of source-separated plastics, including plastic shrink wrap at www.recyclemyplastic.com.

Free refrigerator pickups for recycling and $50 rebate when customers replace their refrigerators with energy-efficient models.  See DTE customer program information at: http://dteenergy.com/residentialCustomers/saveEnergy/rebates/recyclingProgram.html

The weekly curbside compost collection service resumed Monday, March 30, 2009. Resident-supplied 30-35 gallon labeled compost can pickup ended June 30, 2008. Compost continues to be collected in paper bags and as bundled branches. Optional compost carts are available for sale. As of July 7, 2008, the city began picking up grass clippings only from city-authorized compost carts. Link to more information on compost carts.

Ann Arbor's new Customer Response System is an online resource for submitting non-emergency service requests for solid waste pickups and more. Your request is automatically routed to the appropriate city service area for action. Bulky Waste Disposal. To handle oversized items, such as appliances, furniture, mattresses and waste that does not fit into the A2 Carts, please contact private haulers or use the Drop-Off Station or consider local reuse options.
