 Solid Waste and Recycling  

 

The city provides municipal solid waste refuse, recycling, and compost collection and processing services.  All residents and businesses are eligible for weekly recycling collection at no additional charge. Ann Arbor is recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as having one of the top twenty waste reduction programs in North America.

Announcements

Are you are interested in helping shape the new, expanded recycling program coming to Ann Arbor in August, 2010?  Focus groups are forming for Ann Arbor residents living in single-family and duplex homes on Tuesday, Feb. 9 during lunch or dinner time. These focus group quotas are now filled. Interested participants who have already responded will be contacted this week to inform them if they are selected and provided with more details. Thank you!

Recycle Ann Arbor Drop-off Station Announces New Fee Structure Effective Jan. 2, 2010. $3 per vehicle fee to apply to all customers except for compost sales; quantity discount pricing available (PDF)

There will be no interruption of weekly solid waste and recycling collection services on Presidents Day, Monday, Feb. 15, 2010. Pickups will be as normal Monday-Friday for this week. City Hall offices and the Drop-Off Station, only, will be closed on Feb. 15.

Christmas tree recycling options: Free drop-off area available next to the Drop-Off Station from Dec. 15, 2009 to Jan. 30, 2010. Residential curbside pickups of properly prepared evergreen trees will be provided on week from Tues. Jan. 19 through Mon, Jan 25, 2010 on normal solid waste collection days, weather permitting. The annual worm bin composting workshop will be held on Saturday, Feb. 13, in time for Valentine's Day. For more information and to preregister, please check here.

A new Web page devoted to the city's planned expansion to provide a new, source-separated, single-stream recycling program for Ann Arbor starting July 1, 2010 is available at this link

The weekly curbside compost pickups ended for the growing season and will resume on Monday, April 5, 2010. See the Compostables Collection Web page for specific preparation requirements.  Other drop-off and on-site management options for leaves and yard debris are available. NEW US DOT requirements: used household rechargeable batteries must be sealed at the positive end with clear tape before recycling or discarding.

New, reduced hours at the Washtenaw County's Home Toxics Collection Center, 705 N. Zeeb Road near W. Jackson Road will be open the following Saturdays this fall: Sept 12, Oct. 3, Nov. 7, 2009 from 9 a.m. to Noon. Information and scheduling drop-offs by appointment, at 734.222.7874.

Washtenaw County has created a list of drop-off sites for a wider range of source-separated plastics, including plastic shrink wrap at www.recyclemyplastic.com.

Bulky Waste Disposal. To handle oversized items, such as appliances, furniture, mattresses and waste that does not fit into the A2 Carts, please contact private haulers or use the Drop-Off Station or consider local reuse options.
