 Business Recycler Award 

 

Recycle Ann Arbor coordinates a Business Recycler award program to recognize outstanding local businesses for their noteworthy recycling and sustainability efforts. In order to earn the award, businesses must meet the following criteria: They must be located in the City of Ann Arbor and be a Recycle Ann Arbor customer; recycle a high percentage of waste, as verified by a waste and recycling audit; have a designated recycling champion; and  be involved in several sustainable practices, such as paper, cardboard and container recycling; e-waste recycling; zero waste efforts; and special materials recycling (i.e. batteries, Styrofoam).

June 2010   Recycle Ann Arbor recognizes Ann Arbor Bancorp, a wholly-owned, local financial services holding company. It is Ann Arbor 's only local bank, with six branches. From April 1, 2008 through April 30, 2010, Bank of Ann Arbor recycled 18,936 pounds of paper and cardboard, and 11,502 pounds of mixed containers. In addition to paper, cardboard, cans and bottles, Bank of Ann Arbor also recycles batteries, toner cartridges, fluorescent light bulbs, Styrofoam™ and shopping bags. Press release attached.

February 2010   Simon Property Group manages more than 320 shopping centers in the United States, and has owned Briarwood Mall since 2007. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency named Simon Property Group as a 2008 ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year for outstanding energy management and reductions in greenhouse gas emissions at its malls across the country. From April, 2008 through January, 2010, Briarwood Mall recycled 3,582,300 pounds of paper and 127,950 pounds of containers. The mall had been recycling cardboard since 2003, and containers since 2007, but was able to increase recycling volumes through partnering with its 101 tenants and utilizing the City of Ann Arbor’s free recycling program. September 2009  Commercial real estate and property management company Transwestern has been named the Business Recycler of the Month for September, 2009. Transwestern is a national commercial real estate firm which manages the buildings located at 777 and 789 East Eisenhower Parkway in Ann Arbor. The buildings are owned by Transwestern’s sister company, Transwestern Investment Company, and house 18 national and international tenant companies. Press release attached.

August 2009 Georgetown Gifts, 3215 Washtenaw Ave., has been awarded the first Business Recycler of the Month by the local nonprofit Recycle Ann Arbor. This new monthly award program recognizes the recycling and sustainability efforts of Ann Arbor businesses. Press release attached.
