Native Trees and Shrubs of Southeastern Michigan
Stewardship (People Caring for Nature)
Do you enjoy photography and getting out in nature? Join in the fun of NAP’s photo contest. The contest is open to amateur and pro, with categories for youth, teen, and adult.
Submissions may be sent to NAP throughout the spring and summer. New this year, to cut down on plastic waste, photos may be delivered to us via email instead of on a disc. You will still need to mail or hand deliver hard copy prints, entry form, and entry fee (adult category). Entries must be received before 5:00pm on September 4, 2009. Prizes will be awarded, and there will be a display of everyone’s photos in the Ann Arbor District Library in December.
Contest rules and guidelines:
- All pictures must be the original work of the applicant.
- Photos must be taken in Southeastern Michigan.
- Photos should be relevant to the contest categories.
- The contest is open to all photographers, amateur and professional. There are three age categories: Youth (under eleven), Teen (eleven to seventeen), and Adult (eighteen and over).
- Up to five photos may be submitted by each entrant. Please send both:
- Hard copy prints, 4 x 6 to 8 x 10, without frames or matting, with completed photo label attached to each print.
- Electronic files on a disc, or directly emailed to: nap@a2gov.org. Digital file resolution must be no smaller than 300 dpi (for printing as a 4x6 or 8x10), and may be submitted as a .TIF, .JPEG, or .PSD.
- Use provided photo labels to indicate title, category, and optional comments about each photo.
- Entry fee is ten dollars for adults and no charge for youth or teen. This fee covers all photos submitted, and is used to run the contest.
- All contestants must sign the release. If contestant is under eighteen, a parent or guardian must sign the release.
- By entering this contest, contestants agree to abide by its guidelines and waive all claims of any kind against the organizers of this contest.
- Photos must be received in NAP’s office by 5:00 p.m. Friday, September 4, 2009.
- Winners will be announced, and prizes awarded at NAP’s volunteer appreciation potluck on October 29th. All entrants are invited to the potluck. Winners will be notified in advance. Prizes will be sent to winners unable to attend the potluck.

Photos will be judged by three contest judges according to the following:
- How well the photo reflects contest categories.
- Technical merit (focus, exposure, color).
- Artistic merit (composition, originality).
- Unusualness or difficulty of getting the shot.
- Mastery of craft (Evidence of conscious choices in using the camera: selective depth of field, varying exposure, shutter speed, or other camera setting for heightened effect.)
Note: Special effects with Photoshop in which the image is obviously altered are not recommended.
