The City of Ann Arbor Housing Code: Chapter 105 is the governing code for residential rental properties. All residential rental properties must be registered with the City of Ann Arbor Housing Bureau and inspected once every 30 months.

The purpose of the Housing Code is threefold:

  1. To protect the health, safety, and welfare of residents;

  2. To protect a diverse housing stock from deterioration; and

  3. To accomplish all of the above at the lowest cost to owners and renters in order to keep housing costs as low as possible and in a manner consistent with compliance with code.

Tenants
Tenants may request inspections more frequently based on specific complaints or problems. To submit an inspection request, contact the City of Ann Arbor Housing Inspection Unit at 734.794.6267 then select Option 3.

Owners/Agents
Buildings not in compliance with the City's Housing Ordinance will not be certified and cannot legally be rented or occupied. Rental property owners or their agents must live or maintain an office within 25 miles of the City.
