Leslie Park G.C. is located just north of the U of M campus, it was once a farm, orchard and laboratory to Eugene and Emily Leslie. The 200+ acres on which the golf course now sits with it's vast topography and rolling terrian is one of the prettiest parcels of property in Ann Arbor and was purchased from the Leslie's in the early 60's to build Leslie Park Golf Course in 1967.
E. Lawrence Packard from Chicago was hired to design the course. He has designed more than 350 new courses and redesigned more than 250 existing courses.
His Chicago golf course designs include Elgin Country Club, Lake Barrington Shores Golf Club, Shiloh Park Golf Course in Zion, Turnberry Country Club in Crystal Lake and Wedgewood Golf Course in Joliet.
“I try to design a course to make sure that you can use every club in your bag,” Packard said. “The key is that you have to have enough land and some source of fresh water. You design a course that will be tough for the pros but interesting for the average guy.”
His other notable courses including two courses at the Westward Ho Golf Club in Sioux Falls, Iowa and all four courses at Innisbrook.
