The Community Services Area provides a variety of direct services to the Ann Arbor community. The service area consists of three service units. Each unit is committed to providing excellent municipal services to the people who live in, work in and visit the area.
The Community Development Unit is committed to the delivery of housing, economic development and human services to lower income city residents, particularly the disadvantaged and most vulnerable. A primary goal of the Community Development Unit is to assist Ann Arbor citizens who are experiencing difficulty in meeting basic housing and human services needs. This is accomplished by direct services; by providing technical assistance to and oversight of contracts with nonprofit organizations, and creating increased opportunities for lower income families and individuals to live in quality housing and to access community services.
Parks & Recreation Services is proud to serve Ann Arbor residents by providing more than 2,000 acres of park land at 157 park sites. Employing 59 full-time persons and 300 part-time persons, the Service Unit oversees the acquisition, development, maintenance and programming of park facilities. The service unit oversees master planning; site plan review; rental housing inspections; historic preservation; zoning coordination; construction inspections and permits; and building, housing and sign code enforcement. It also provides support to the City Planning Commission and all appeals boards.
