The Ann Arbor Human Rights Commission was created in 1970 by City Council to act as a watchdog for human and civil rights in the City. We are a group of nine (9) Ann Arbor residents who are appointed by the Mayor and Council.  We are responsible for monitoring civil and human rights concerns that affect all people in Ann Arbor, including those who work for the City.

Under Ann Arbor law, people are protected from discrimination in all aspects of life in our city:  employment, housing, and public accommodations.

People are protected against discrimination based on their:

Race, Color, National Origin, Sex, Age, Religion, Sexual Orientation, Condition of Pregnancy, Marital Status, Height/Weight, Mental  or Physical Limitations, Source of Income, Family Responsibilities, Gender Identity, Educational Association, HIV Status

The law that applies to these situations is:

City of Ann Arbor Human Rights OrdinanceChapter 112, Section 9:150, et seq.

To access this ordinance, click on the link, above, then scroll down and click on "Continue to City Data."  For easier review purposes, choose one of the "frames" options.  The table of contents of the City Code will appear in the left hand column.  In the table of contents, go to Chapter 112, which is the Human Rights Ordinance.  When you click on Chapter 112, the table of contents will expand to show a list of the sections in the chapter.  If you choose one of the "no frames" options, you will need to search for "Chapter 112" and then use the "document" and "next document" functions in the left column to view each of the sections of Chapter 112.
