Permit applications can be emailed or faxed to the address or number on the application.

Bonfire Permit

Bonfire permit fee $50

A bonfire permit is required when a resident or organization would like to have a fire on the ground that is larger than 3 x 3 feet in size, anything smaller than 3' x 3' is considered a recreation fire and a permit is not required. Bonfires shall not exceed 5 x 5 feet in size and shall not be conducted within 50 feet of a structure or combustible materials. Conditions which may cause a fire to spread within 50 feet of a structure shall be eliminated prior to ignition.

​Recreational Fires and Outdoor Fireplaces

Recreational fires (camp fires) shall not be conducted within 25 feet of a structure or combustible materials.  Conditions which could cause a fire to spread within 25 feet of a structure shall be eliminated prior to ignition.​

Portable outdoor fireplaces shall be used in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and shall not be operated within 15 feet of a structure or combustible materials.

Have an extinguishing source available in case of an emergency.

​Yard waste is not permitted to be burned within the City of Ann Arbor.

Any fire may be requested to be extinguished by the fire department if a complaint has been created, with or without a permit.

Tent Permit

Tent Permit Application with Checklist (PDF)

Tents or membrane structures having an area in excess of 400 sq ft shall not be erected, operated or maintained for any purpose without first obtaining a permit and approval from the fire code offical. 

Tents open on all sides which comply with all of the following three (3) exceptions do not require a tent permit.

  1. Individual tents having a maximum size of 700 sq ft.
  2. Multiple tents placed side by side not exceeding 700 sq ft in total.
  3. Tents with a minimum clearance of 12 ft to all structures and other tents.

A $25 permit fee will be invoiced to the applicant for application review and processing.

Retain the checklist page for reference during your tent set up in order to conduct a self inspection.
