Question:  How do I become a Police Officer with the City of Ann Arbor?

Answer:  To become a police officer with the City of Ann Arbor, successful candidates must meet the below list of requirements.

  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Associates Degree or equivalent college credits
  • Or, absent the college requirement, must have a minimum of 2 years prior experience as a sworn full-time law enforcement officer, or 2 years active military service.
  • Persons who are 'Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards' (MCOLES) certified/certifiable or eligible for waiver of training are preferred.
  • Candidates must pass an extensive background investigation, physical and psychological exams and drug screen.
  • No felony convictions
  • Misdemeanor convictions considered on a case by case basis
  • Must have a satisfactory driving record:
  • Valid Michigan operator's license
  • No OUIL/Impaired convictions within 7 years of application
  • No current suspended or revoked license
  • Less than 6 points on driving record
  • Less than 3 misdemeanor/civil infractions within 2 years of application
  • Less than 2 accidents with violations within 2 years of application (this is considered on a case by case basis)
