 Bicycling Commutes

While bicyclists make up a small percentage commuters, they have been increasing in number over the past few decades in Ann Arbor. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the percentage of bicycle commuters increased from 1.8% in 1980 to 2.3% in 2000. The American Community Survey estimated an average of 3.5% of Ann Arbor workers commuted by bicycle between 2005 and 2007, compared to the state and national averages of less than 1% during the same time period.

How does riding a bike affect the Ann Arbor environment?

Riding a bicycle to work greatly reduces greenhouse gas emissions, including carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides. Bicycling also reduces dependence on fossil fuels, saves gas money, reduces traffic congestion, and has positive impacts for physical and mental health.
