Project Details:
Construction of a new water and sewer main at Washtenaw Avenue & Wayne Street is scheduled to begin May 5, 2008, and will continue for approximately four weeks. The work will be performed by Lester Brothers Excavating, Inc of Jackson, Michigan.
This is Phase I of a larger project to extend water and sewer service down Wayne Street in order to serve the residents with reliable water and sewer service. Phase I will involve extending mains from Washtenaw Ave. onto Wayne St. ahead of road work to be done on Washtenaw Avenue by Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) this summer. Phase II part of the project is planned to occur later this summer, or possibly next year. During Phase II, water main will be constructed along the length of Wayne Street, with sanitary main constructed from Washtenaw Ave. to Lorraine Pl., along with sanitary leads available to tie into for the 1st Church of Christ, Scientist and some houses along Wayne St.
Construction staking and videotaping, as well as “Miss Dig” utility marking, are expected to occur prior to construction start-up. We ask that you do not disturb the stakes and utility flags throughout the duration of the project, as they provide important information to the construction crews. You may also see protective fencing erected around some trees.
Wayne Street will be closed to through traffic during construction, and one lane of Washtenaw in each direction will be temporarily closed. However, local access for vehicular and pedestrian traffic will be maintained at all times. Driveway access, garbage collection, and mail delivery will be maintained throughout the project. As a result of the construction activities, it will be necessary for our contractor to post temporary “No Parking” signs on a portion of Wayne Street, so that work can proceed in a timely manner.
During Phase I, we anticipate interruption to the water service to only one home during construction. However, Phase II will include brief periods of water shut off for a section of houses near Wayne Street when the new water main is tied in to the existing main, and when house services are transferred to the new main. Residents will receive written notice at least 24 hours before these scheduled shutoffs are expected to occur.
Unfortunately, the construction will generate dust and noise, and will cause some inconvenience. We appreciate your patience and cooperation during the project.

Current Status:
The project is under construction. Traffic control measures were put up in Washtenaw Avenue Monday May 5th, 2008. Water main is being installed within the Washtenaw Ave right-of-way; work will continue for at least four weeks.
Traffic Control:
During the construction, the two lanes open (one in either direction) will be only 9.5' wide. For this reason, please drive slowly through the construction zone. This also keeps our construction workers and inspectors safe.
