 S. Fifth Ave. and Vaughn St. Water Main Replacement

Project Overview

The purpose of this project is to replace existing 4 - inch water main with a 12- inch water main along South Fifth Avenue from north side of Washington to Liberty and to replace existing 4 - inch water main with a mew 8 - inch water main along Vaughn Street from between Packard and East University. Existing 4 inch water mains are under sized and do not provide adequate Fire Protection to area.  This work will also provide improved water quality to the area.

Following the installation of the water main, Vaughn Street will have the asphalt pavement completely replaced. South Fifth Ave. will have the trench asphalt patched to match the existing pavement

Schedule

Work on a project is scheduled to begin on South Fifth Ave. in May of 2011, and is anticipated to be complete before the start of Ann Arbor Art Fair which is scheduled for July 20th. The work on Vaughn Street will follow S. Fifth Ave. completion and is scheduled to be done in August of 2011.

Impact on Traffic & Local Residents

During construction, it will be necessary for our contractor to post temporary “No Parking” signs so that work can proceed in a timely manner. Access to driveways will be maintained during this time, with the exception of some short periods of time when the water main installation crosses in front of your driveway.  When this occurs, the contractor or a City representative will knock on residents’ doors to make sure the driveway does not need to be accessed during that time.

Garbage collection and mail delivery will be maintained throughout the project. Water service will be maintained during construction, except for brief periods when the new water main is tied in to the existing main, and when house services are transferred to the new main.  Written notice will be given to residents two days before these shutoffs.

Unfortunately, the construction will generate dust and noise, and will cause some inconvenience.  We would like to thank you in advance for your patience and cooperation during the project.

On South Fifth Ave. one lane of south bound traffic will be maintained during project.   Washington is scheduled to be closed intermittently at S. Fifth Ave. during construction.  Traffic detours will be posted in advance of closure.
