Newport Creek Culvert Crossing Project & Bird Road Sanitary Sewer Project

Last Updated:  10/26/09

Project Overview

The City is currently in the process of designing two projects in the Newport Road corridor.

The first project is to design and construct a permanent replacement for the culvert where Newport Road crosses the waterway informally known as Newport Creek, located just north of Warrington Drive.  In recent years, heavy storms have washed out Newport Road multiple times at this location, causing costly repairs and creating a public safety hazard.  The project will be designed to prevent future washouts of Newport Road.

The second project is to design and construct a new sanitary sewer along Bird Road and Newport Road. The residents of Newport Road, who are currently served by individual septic fields, have asked for City sanitary sewer.  We propose extending the existing sanitary sewer in Bird Road westerly to the intersection with Newport Road, then to roughly 650 feet south along Newport Road. The new sanitary sewer will be available for connections to both City and Township properties. Any new construction on the lots currently empty will be requred to connect to the new sanitary sewer.

The City will be holding a PUBLIC MEETING to discuss these projects is scheduled for November 12th, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. at the Forsythe Middle School Media Center.  For more information, click here.

Schedule

The project is currently scheduled for construction in 2010. While a more detailed schedule is not yet available, the majority of the construction will most likely occur in mid-Summer, when our driest weather is typically experienced.

Impact on Traffic & Local Residents

Due to the nature of these projects, a temporary closure of Newport Road will be required. The closure will likely extend from just north of the Newport Creek crossing to south of Bird Road.  Despite the road being closed, access to residences along this stretch will be maintained.  Detour plans for the project are currently under development.

Progress Updates

Once construction is ready to begin, we will be sending out weekly e-mail updates to anyone interested in receiving them.  If you would like to receive these weekly progress/schedule updates, please send an e-mail to nhutchinson@a2gov.org and you will be added to the list. Please put “Newport/Bird Road” in the subject line.
