2011 Philo Festival of Media Arts
CTN and its community producers have won 15 First Place Philos and 12 Finalist (Second Place) Philos. In addition, we have also received 15 Nominations for Excellence Awards. Winners of the Excellence Awards will be announced at the Philo Festival of Media Arts, Saturday, October 8, 2011 at Northern Kentucky University. The Philo Festival of Media Arts is presented by the Central States Region of the Alliance for Community Media.

A renovated 1920's Vaudeville theatre was the setting for the 2008 Philo T. Farnsworth Video Festival, presented by the Alliance for Community Media Central States Chapter in Mt. Pleasant, MI. As the inventor of the first receiving tube for TV transmissions, Philo is known as the father of modern television. He was just 14 years old when he first came up with the idea for an all-electric television system. The ACM honors the memory of Philo T. Farnsworth by recognizing the efforts of modern day pioneers who work to further develop the use of his technology and promote the use of television in our communities. The "PHILO" is awarded as recognition of excellence in cable programming. Congratulations to Ann Arbor's community producers and CTN staff on winning 7 First Place Philo Awards and 6 Finalist Awards!

Alliance for Community Media-Central States Regional Conference
The theme for the recent ACM Regional Conference was "Get Exposed to Access!" The keynote speaker was State Representative Mark Meadows, who updated us on his pending Michigan House Bill 5396. The bill is designed to change the Michigan Uniform Franchise Law, which threatens the funding and existence of PEG (public, education, and government) access channels. Representative Meadows says, "There are no channels that rival the importance of PEG channels." Among other things, the bill would prohibit cable companies from charging for PEG channels, and prevent them from moving the channels from lower channels.
CTN was well-represented at the conference, as three Ann Arbor producers gave seminars there. Emmy award-winning PBS producers Matt Zacharias and Donna Ryen presented "Elements of Success." They reminded us that everyone has a story to tell, and that it helps to be passionate about your subject matter. These two producers have found that after interviewing people, their piece starts to come together. They also pointed out that the most compelling part of producing is the healing that often takes place for their subjects. "There's power in this medium!"
Matt Zacharias and Donna Ryen have won multiple Emmys (four each!) They produce programming for PBS's Michigan Television (WFUM), and they co-own Ville Production Company. Matt also teaches digital video production and advanced editing at WCC.
Community producer Tom Bayer has been producing programs at CTN since 1991. For the last few years he has produced and hosted the live "Disability Concerns" series. At the ACM conference he presented a seminar with Social Worker Amy Hovey called, "Non-Profits Take Notice". Amy has spearheaded a series on MAC3 TV in Mt. Pleasant featuring persons with disabilities speaking out titled, "Our Own Voice". Amy stressed how programs like this build understanding in a community, and help to build self-esteem for persons with disabilities. Tom is a visible example of that, and he explained how he doesn't let MS define his life. He partnered with community producer Barbara Clarke to produce his Hotline Studio show on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month at 3 PM. Barbara acts as his hands, pushing the buttons as dictated by Tom. Tom books his guests, many high profile medical experts, and expertly interviews them.

Hundreds Attend CTN Open House
We fired up the studio cameras and stoked the grill, as 300 people joined CTN for our 35th Anniversary bash on September 5th. The day began with CTN hosting a meeting for 30 members of the Alliance for Community Media - Michigan Chapter. PBS (Michigan Television) producers Donna Ryen & Matt Zacharias presented a talk on their Emmy award-winning work as well.
Party-goers lined-up to tour CTN's production truck and studios, and even taped testimonials saluting CTN on its historic day. They also noshed on burgers and dogs, registered to win CTN 35th Anniversary T-Shirts and the grand prize of a DVD Player, and they took a quiz about CTN to win a Portable DVD Player. In 1973 "The Waltons" and "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" swept the Emmys, the last "Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In" aired on NBC, and gas was 40 cents a gallon. That also was the year that a group of community activitists launched community access television in Ann Arbor

CTN Assistant Manager of Public/Education, Lucy Ann Visovatti, presented a plaque to Widd Schmidt commemorating his wife, Martha Schmidt, for her years of service to CTN. Martha and Widd were part of a group of community organizers who helped found CTN in 1973. Sadly, Martha passed away earlier this year.
